The capital and port of the island is Zakynthos, which is located at the feet of the hill of Bochali. A modern city, which was built after the destruction of the old city by the earthquakes of 1953 it is a city, which is continuously expanding inland due to the large concentration of activity that has developed during the last few years.

In this city it is worth visiting the convent of Aghios (Saint) Dionysios where the holy relics of the saint are kept, the very interesting museums, the plazas of Aghios (Saint) Markos and Dionysios Solomos, the commercial center of Alexandra Roma and the beachside avenue of Konstantinou Lomvadou or Strata Marina (as it is known), and even the old churches that were saved or renovated after the earthquakes.

Bochali, the settlement around the Castle, will charm you with its small, quiet alleys and its old houses with its flowery gardens and with the social clubs where the old music of Zakynthos can be heard.

The hill of Strani which inspired the lyrics of the Greek national anthem by Dionysios Solomos, as well as Bochali, on which the Venetian Castle is located, with its wonderful, panoramic view of the modern city of Zakynthos and the Ionian sea, will impress all who see them.

One walk along the city streets will convince us that in Zakynthos the attempts to preserve the style that was prevalent before the earthquakes, influences the buildings as well as the town planning.
